French Toast Friday

I'm a HUGE fan of french toast, y'all! Growing up, it was always my favorite breakfast treat. My mom didn't make it often, mostly on holidays, and it wasn't fancy at all, but the soft, custardy, sweet cinnamon goodness that is french toast has always been irresistible to me.

I can't be the only person obsessed with French toast, which is why I started French Toast Friday. From now until the end of 2018 we'll be sharing creative and delicious French toast recipes every Friday here on Life Tastes Good. What is Stuffed French Toast?

Stuffed French toast is basically french toast filled with a creamy center, typically a sweetened cream cheese, but I've also seen mascarpone and nutella fillings too!

There are different options for making stuffed french toast. The most popular version is similar to Ihop's stuffed french toast where you make a cream cheese sandwich, dip it in a french toast egg batter and cook in a skillet the way you would traditional french toast. That's delicious and all, but it does require constant attention to pan fry the french toast sandwiches, so it's a bit more labor intensive than a baked stuffed French toast.

Several months ago I came across a baked cream cheese stuffed French toast recipe on Recipetin Eats. I was so intrigued by Nagi's recipe, I made it for brunch I was hosting. It was a HUGE hit!

Recently, after developing my Slow Cooker French Toast recipe, I wondered if I could make a cream cheese stuffed French toast in the slow cooker. Well, wonder no more! It totally worked and it is amazing! I didn't think my slow cooker French toast could get any better, but that layer of cream cheese really puts this slow cooker Stuffed French Toast recipe over the top!

How do you make cream cheese Stuffed French Toast in the slow cooker?

  1. Spray the slow cooker crockpot liberally with cooking spray or grease with butter. I use Baker's Joy for best results.
  2. Layer 3 slices of bread on the bottom of the slow cooker. They will overlap. Then 2 more layers of bread on top of that so you have 3 layers of bread slices (3 slices in each layer). See step #1 in my picture below for a visual reference.
  3. You'll notice there is space on each side of the bread. Gently push a slice of bread down in the cavity on each side of the slow cooker.
  4. Whisk the eggs, milk, and cream together well and then mix in the sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.
  5. Pour HALF the egg mixture over the bread slices in the slow cooker. See step #2 in my picture below
  6. Combine 8 oz cream cheese, 1/3 cup sugar, and 1/2 tsp vanilla and mix well.
  7. Spread cream cheese layer on top of bread. Or dollop it on if it doesn't spread well for you. See step #3 in my picture below
  8. Place 2 more layers of bread slices on top of the cream cheese. That's 2 layers of 3 bread slices each. See step #4 in my picture below
  9. Pour the remaining HALF of the egg mixture over the bread slices in the slow cooker. See step #5 in my picture below
  10. Put the lid on the slow cooker and set it to low for 3 hours.
  11. After 3 hours, unplug the slow cooker and allow the stuffed French toast to rest for 15 minutes. Resting is important as it needs to set up before you remove it from the slow cooker.
  12. After the resting time, run a butter knife around the edge of the French toast loaf and carefully remove the French Toast from the slow cooker crockpot.
  13. If desired, sprinkle powdered sugar on the French Toast loaf and top with fresh fruit. Serve with maple syrup and enjoy!.

What kind of bread do you use for Stuffed French Toast?

French toast is only as good as the bread you use to make it, but you do have options as there are a few different types of bread that will make a quality french toast recipe. Choose a loaf of bread with denser crumb so it holds up to the soaking such as...
  • Brioche
  • Challah
  • Classic country white bread

TIPS: Day old bread is best when making French toast, but fresh will work just fine for this stuffed French toast recipe. Additionally, you can leave the crust on or off. I like the crust, so I leave it on.

How do you make Stuffed French Toast filling?

  1. Mix 8 ounces softened cream cheese with 1/3 cup white sugar and 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  2. Mix well to really combine the sugar with the cream cheese
  3. The consistency will be looser and easier to spread or spoon onto the bread slices in the slow cooker
