It’s getting to be that time of the year when everything gets a little more decadent. We find ourselves indulging in all of the treats that appear during the holiday season – Cookies, pies, and eggnog.

It turns out that eggnog is not just for sipping – Eggnog adds great flavor to everyday breakfast items like French Toast and Baked Eggnog Donuts! The richness of the eggnog makes it the perfect substitution for heavy cream – the ingredient that makes French toast so delicious.

This Eggnog French Toast is super easy to prepare and the flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg make it a great dish to serve to guests during the holiday season and on Christmas morning. This recipe will get everyone in the holiday spirit!

EGGNOG FRENCH TOAST INGREDIENTS

  • 1 loaf hearty bread - The key to the best french toast recipe is the bread. The best bread for french toast is thick slices of brioche or challah bread.
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups eggnog - Use traditional, full fat egg nog for maximum flavor. Either store-bought or a homemade eggnog recipe.
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract - Quality pure vanilla extract is always best. Store bought or homemade.
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg plus more for garnish - For maximum flavor, use freshly grated nutmeg if possible
  • 4 Tbsp. butter or ghee
  • Maple syrup - optional

HOW TO MAKE EGGNOG FRENCH TOAST

  1. Cut bread into thick slices and place half of the bread in a shallow baking dish or large bowl
  2. Crack 5 eggs into a mixing bowl and add 1 1/2 cups eggnog. Whisk in 1 tsp. vanilla extract, 2 tsp. cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg. Stir all of the ingredients until completely combined.
  3. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread and turn each piece over until it is completely coated.
  4. Heat a skillet or griddle to medium-low. Add 1 Tbsp. of butter or ghee and allow to melt completely.
  5. Once the pan is fully heated and the butter melted add as many pieces of bread as will fit in the pan. Toast the first side for a few minutes until it is golden brown. Flip and repeat on the second side of the bread. Each side will need to cook for a few minutes depending on the size of the bread and the type of pan you are using. Repeat steps 3-5 with the remaining bread slices.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST FRENCH TOAST

  • Soaking the French toast bread - I find it works best to use a shallow baking dish or bowl when soaking the bread. Place half of the bread in a shallow dish and pour half of the egg mixture over it. Flip each piece of bread over a few times to make sure they are fully coated. Depending on the size of your dish it’s best to complete this in stages – Once the first batch of bread is coated it is fried and then the second half of the bread and egg mixture is added to the dish.
  • Frying the French Toast - I like to use a cast iron skillet for best results, but any type of skillet or griddle will work. Heat the skillet or griddle to medium low and add 1 Tbsp. or so of butter. You can also use ghee OR a combination of oil and butter to achieve that nice golden color. Once the butter is melted add as many bread slices as will fit in the pan. Toast until the first side is golden (this usually takes 3-4 minutes) and then flip over. The heat may need to be adjusted depending on the type of pan you are using. The pan should be hot enough to fully toast the bread but not hot enough to burn it. I find that somewhere between medium-low and medium works great for a cast iron skillet. Repeat the toasting process with the remainder of the bread. Be sure to add another Tbsp. of butter or ghee between each batch. That butter is essential for optimal toastiness!

  5. Once the bread is toasted on both sides remove and set aside. Melt another Tbsp. of butter and repeat with another batch of bread. Continue this process of soaking bread and frying until all the bread is toasted.
  6. Serve Eggnog French Toast with warm maple syrup and a dusting of nutmeg (freshly grated if possible).

NOTES:

This recipe can be doubled to serve a larger group.
