In the early 1900's, visitors to Coney Island in New York were taking the term 'hot dog' a bit too literally, so the Chamber of Commerce banned the use of the term 'hot dog'. Thus our favorite American classic became known as a 'Coney Island' by those visiting the area. No matter what the name, if it is a hot dog it must be slathered in yellow mustard! It's true!
We use mustard on Hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and even add it to some of our summer salads such as potato salad or macaroni salad. Did you know Heinz Ketchup has a new mustard? I grew up on Heinz Ketchup, so HAD to try the New Heinz® Yellow Mustard when I saw it in Walmart.
I am not surprised that I LOVE the flavor of this mustard. Heinz has always been my go-to for ketchup. I even convinced my neighbor to switch to Heinz! During the first barbecue she hosted, I asked her if she minded if I went home and got my Heinz ketchup (yes, I feel that strongly about it!) She was cool with it, but didn't understand what was the big deal. Ketchup is ketchup, right? WRONG! I had her do a blind taste test and guess which ketchup won? Heinz, of course!
Now I feel the same way about the mustard! With a secret blend of spices and vinegar for the perfect balance of flavor and tang and 100% natural ingredients, Heinz Yellow Mustard just tastes better! It's no wonder Heinz has been making food taste great for almost 150 years!
Let me show you how to make these tasty Coney Island Hot Dogs with a delicious meat relish and lots of Heinz Yellow Mustard. The mustard adds a nice tangy zip to the spicy beef relish flavor and brings it all together, so don't forget the mustard! It is most important!
First we need to brown about 1 1/4 pounds of ground chuck for the meat relish, being sure to crumble it up well...
Next we mix in 1/2 cup diced onions, 1 tablespoon of garlic, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin, 1/2 teaspoon celery salt, a pinch of cayenne pepper, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Saute until the onions start to soften.
Now mix in 1/3 cup Heinz Ketchup, 2 tablespoons butter, and 2 cups water. Bring the mixture to a simmer and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture has reduced to a thick sauce. This will take about 45 minutes to an hour.
When the beef relish is almost done, start making your hot dogs. Hot dogs are meant to be eaten outside, so I like to fire up the grill and cook my hot dogs in a cast iron skillet with butter. I heat the skillet on the grill over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter. Then I add the hot dogs and let them sear nicely on one side for a couple of minutes. Once they are nicely browned, I roll them over to brown the other side. Yummm they are soo good!! You can toss the hot dogs straight on the grill if you prefer.
When I cook hot dogs indoors, I cook them the same way on the stove top. In my article titled 'How to Cook Hot Dogs' I share how to cook hot dogs in a skillet on the stove along with lots of other info for enjoying hot dogs!
When your hot dogs and beef relish are ready, assemble your Coney Island Dogs. Gather your ingredients...
Top the hot dog with meat relish...
Add some diced onions...
and squeeze on the Heinz Yellow Mustard and enjoy!
I love how Heinz designed their squeeze bottle. It is a top-down squeeze bottle to prevent that first squirt of watered down mustard. That means no more water mess! You don't even have to shake the bottle before using! Genius!! The mustard is also thicker and creamier. No more soggy bread! I love how it just sort of sits on top and doesn't soak into the bread!
