Red Wine Chocolate Truffles #SundaySupper

Red Wine Chocolate Truffles are bite sized pieces of chocolate heaven. Traditional French Truffles are made with a simple chocolate ganache and rolled in cocoa powder. I flavored my chocolate ganache with red wine and rolled some in crushed almonds to mix things up a bit!

I love the holiday season! The sites, the sounds, the wonderful aromas!! It is a magical time of year, and the food always seems to bring everyone together. My favorite memories involve family and friends gathered round the kitchen reminiscing about the year and simply enjoying being together. Our holiday celebrations always include good food, good wine, and good times. My Red Wine Chocolate Truffles are a holiday tradition and make a memorable gift to give to family and friends.

Truffles sound like they'd be difficult to make, but actually they are quite simple. There are just a few ingredients and you only need about 15 minutes of prep time. Doesn't get much easier!! For best results, I recommend using quality chocolate and reading the recipe directions first for how-to tips.

To flavor these truffles, I used a delicious Limited Edition Holiday Red Wine from Gallo Family Vineyards. With hints of mixed berries and chocolate, this wine is the perfect addition to my holiday truffles! Gallo also has a delicious Apple and Caramel White blend just for the holidays. Red Wine Chocolate Truffles #SundaySupper

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons Gallo Family Vineyards Holiday Red Wine at room temperature
  • 6 ounces good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter at room temperature
  • unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Bring just to a boil and stir in 2 tablespoons red wine.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until chocolate is melted and smooth. Add 1 tablespoon softened butter and stir to combine. Give it a taste and add more salt as needed. Pour chocolate mixture into a bowl, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  3. When the chocolate is firm, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and get a small bowl of unsweetened cocoa powder. You want the cocoa powder to be deep enough where you can drop the chocolate ganache pieces in and easily cover it with the cocoa powder.
  4. Coat your hands with cocoa powder. Using the small end of a melon baller, scoop out some of the chocolate mixture and drop it into the cocoa powder. Cover it with cocoa powder and then roll it into a ball with the palms of your hands. Be sure your palms are nicely coated with the cocoa powder so the chocolate doesn't stick to you. Place the truffle on the parchment paper and continue to make the truffles in the same manner until all the ganache is used. If the ganache gets too soft to handle, just refrigerate it until firm again. Be sure to keep your hands nicely coated with cocoa powder. It definitely makes it easier to shape the truffles into balls. Refrigerate until chilled and enjoy!
Note: I coated some of my truffles with crushed almonds. You can use your favorite nut or even coconut if you roll that way <smile>

Yield: about 2 dozen
Prep Time: 15 mins.
