Homemade Tomato Salsa Recipe

Homemade Tomato Salsa is about as simple to make as it gets and uses all fresh ingredients for maximum flavor.

The first time I made this, Don declared he would never be able to eat store-bought salsa again! Pretty bold for someone who just has to enjoy it and doesn't have to do all the chopping, don't you think? <Smile>

I was at our local vegetable stand and all the tomatoes looked so good, it got me craving this salsa and also gave me a great idea for dinner - Grilled Chicken with fresh tomato salsa, avocados and pepper jack cheese! Doesn't that sound amazing?! It's my Grilled California Chicken recipe and it is so easy to make and super tasty!

Just about any fresh, ripe tomato will do, but I used Roma tomatoes because they looked and smelled especially wonderful. Please feel free to use the best looking tomatoes you can find.

Although I give measurements in this recipe, you really need to just taste and adjust as you go. Use the recipe as a guide and make this to your specific tastes. There really is no right or wrong way as long as you LOVE it! Then use the salsa to top just about anything or sit down with a big bag of chips and enjoy!

Homemade Tomato Salsa Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 Roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1/2 cup diced onions - I used a sweet Vidalia onion
  • 3 Serrano Chiles, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup freshly chopped cilantro
  • 1/2 tablespoon freshly minced garlic
  • the juice of 1/2 a lime
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Taste as you go and adjust the flavors as needed.
  2. I recommend refrigerating before using to allow the flavors to mingle and intensify. Enjoy!

  2. I love homemade salsa. We have one store that supplies decent store bought stuff, I buy that if I'm in a crunch. I really prefer to cut up my own.

    1. Me too! I love how versatile it is too! Sometimes I'll put it in the blender and give it a whirl to make it less chunky, but mostly we like our salsa chunky! Thanks for stopping by my blog today Brandy!

  4. That's Pico de Gallo. That's what you call salsa when Its not cooked. True salsa is when you cook down the tomatoes. But if you ask me, pic de gallo is much better than salsa

  5. Loved the salsa, didn't love the serrano peppers. Had to buy a big package. I was only able to use one. It was like when I unknowingly
smell what in a bottle only to find out it is ammonia and it goes to my brain and I almost past out. Had a very violent cough and my hand got all red and with a blistery rash and my eyes were burning.

    1. Oh no! What a terrible reaction :( If you don't have that same reaction with jalapeno peppers, I'd definitely recommend using them over the serrano - they are a bit milder. If your reaction is a capsaicin allergy, it would be best to avoid peppers all together.
