How To Make Homemade Caramel Sauce

How To Make Homemade Caramel Sauce - Caramel Sauce is a rich, creamy beautiful confectionery made by melting sugar and combining it with butter and cream. It is highly addictive! I need 24 hour supervision after making a batch of this homemade goodness!

The rich, smooth, buttery sweet flavor is so dangerously good you'll be eating it off a spoon right out of the jar...unless you are like me and can't wait! Just dip a spoon right in the pan! Why not? But be sure to close your eyes because this is an experience!! Savor the goodness!

Or you can be like the Hubs and slice up some fruit for dipping, and then have a bowl of ice cream and drizzle it on there too! He couldn't stop!! I don't have much hope for the other jar making it through the night... This would make a nice gift for family and friends IF you are able to resist its charms long enough to deliver it!

How To Make Homemade Caramel Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 stick), softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, warmed
  • sea salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a 10-12" stainless steel skillet (don't use non-stick), melt 1/2 cup sugar over mid-low heat, shaking the pan gently every so often. This is going to take a good 30 minutes of babying the sugar. Don't rush this process. You don't want to burn the sugar. It will soon melt into a smooth, dark liquid. Continue gently stirring over the heat until you reach the smooth dark colored liquid. Try not to allow the sugar to get up on the sides of the pan.
  2. Add 1/4 cup unsalted butter (1/2 stick), softened to room temperature and gently stir to combine. Very slowly add 1/2 cup warmed heavy whipping cream, stirring. Be careful. If you add the cream too quickly the mixture will steam and might bubble up. Stir constantly over medium heat to combine the ingredients. Keep stirring until the sauce thickens slightly and is completely smooth - about another 10 minutes. Again, don't rush this! The sauce might get chunks in it, but if you keep heating they will melt and you will have a smooth caramel colored sauce that is very hot! Please don't taste the sauce until it has cooled a bit. It will be over 300 degrees and will burn whatever it touches.
  3. Once the sauce is smooth, remove from heat, and add salt to taste. Allow to cool and enjoy! It will thicken as it cools.
Yield: about 1 cup
Prep Time: 5 mins.
Cook time: 40 mins.
Total time: 45 mins.
